What Is Biophilia?

The word “biophilia” comes from the Greek prefix “philia,” which means “love of.” A love of life or living things is what it actually implies. The love of nature that is profoundly ingrained in human nature is a natural instinct that is inscribed in our DNA. This, according to researchers, has contributed to our success as a species by enabling us to choose the most productive area, plant food, and raise offspring. Our urge to interact with and be in the natural environment is physiological. The term “biophilia” was originally used by psychologist Erich Fromm in 1964 to refer to “the intense love of life and everything that is living.” Following the publication of Edward O. Wilson’s book Biophilia in 1984, the term “biophilia” as a concept gained increased recognition. Wilson, an American biologist, described it as “the impulse to join with other forms of life.”This research has made many architects and designers see the relationship between some of our contemporary illnesses and the layout of many modern structures, including offices. Thus, biophilic design was created.

What Is Biophilic Design?

Americans are now spending an increasing amount of time indoors (about 90% of the time, according to most surveys), therefore the idea of biophilia, its traits, and its significant advantages for urban inhabitants have become a popular design subject.

But what exactly is biophilic design, what are its key advantages for businesses and workers, and how may it aid your upcoming construction project? Including a few shrubs, flowers, or other natural components isn’t the extent of biophilic design. There are five fundamental concepts of biophilic design that must first be understood in order to be effective.

1. Spacing

Spaces must have frequent, continuous interactions with nature (isolated or irregular encounters don’t have the same impact).

2. Evolutionary

Design should emphasize natural features important to human evolution and survival (try to avoid underwater or amongst the bird’s scenes)

3. Emotion

By gratifying innate ties to nature, biophilic design should promote emotional bonds to natural environments and locations (This is what will lead to improves well-being, motivation, and focus)

4. Interconnection

Solitary houseplants or other out-of-context natural components are not regarded to be a part of a biophilic design; rather, it necessitates an integrated, mutually reinforcing, and interrelated approach throughout the entire environment or area. Try to recreate actual nature, don’t just throw some in the corner!

4. Community

It encourages strong ties between individuals and their surroundings (enhancing a sense of unity and responsibility)

Three Main Types Of Biophilic Design

Direct Encounters

Looking at flowing water, sunlight peering through other natural elements or animal interactions.

Indirect Encounters

Images, reproductions, or artwork that incorporates nature ( Made of wood, flowers, dirt etc).

Space and Place

Innately calming spatial characteristics that are reminiscent of the natural world. Creating a natural vibe or feeling.

Biophilic Designs Effect On The Circadian Rhythm

Throughout human history, the sun has influenced our circadian cycles. Although daylighting design is not new, we have learned a lot about guiding principles for integrating effective and balanced natural light into indoor settings. Innately, we have always appreciated the value of daylight in our designs(ie windows and skylights). This is a crucial aspect of biophilic design since changing illumination according to the time of day helps our circadian cycles and connects us to nature. The architecture community has established criteria recently to gauge both the quantity and quality of daylight in our buildings. This includes spatial daylight autonomy (sDA), which quantifies the proportion of a region that is illuminated for longer than the intended level. SDA often inquires, “Is there sufficient light in the space?” Another statistic, annual solar exposure (ASE), quantifies how much of the area is subjected to excessive sunlight, sometimes known as glare. This assessment remains attainable thanks to specialized software programs, which are fundamental for many projects.

In order to create a balanced daylit room that offers both high levels of sDA and low levels of ASE, well-designed window and skylight configurations are often not sufficient. Several essential elements can be included for a harmonic recipe for daylighting and a strong biophilic design. These include architectural features like building orientation and shading, interior design elements like furniture placement and proper reflectance values, and lighting elements like light position and daylight harvesting.

How Artificial Sky’s LED Product Can Aid Our Cirdaian Rhythm.

LED stand for light emitting Diode. This technology is a big part of how artificial lighting can create a biophilic atmosphere. Programmed LEDs may produce a dynamic environment throughout the day that preserves the circadian cycles of the human body by altering color, brightness, and intensity. Our Artificial lighting sources and luminaires have evolved significantly in recent years, offering new and practical ways to assist human circadian cycles and enhance the biophilic design in our interior spaces. Researchers have been putting a lot of effort into figuring out how intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells function and how they respond to both natural and artificial light sources. According to studies, the amount of light, its spectrum, time of day exposure, length, and dispersion all affect how any light source affects our circadian rhythm.

All of this serves to demonstrate how difficult it is to filter through the available data when selecting biophilic lighting for a construction project. It might be difficult to comprehend the variety and impact of light quality, the similarities and variations between spectrum and color temperature, and what circadian stimulation is best for each age group and application. However, That is where Artificial Sky comes in! We are experts in our field with years of experience in promoting and installing biophilic Products. Most Popular Places For Artificial Sky’s Biophilic Designs

Healthcare

There’s usually nothing fun about hospitals. That is, until Artificial Sky brought life-size illusions of nature into the mix, amid hopes of boosting spirits, spreading cheer, and improving patient outcomes. These ultra-realistic LED skylights, immersive Virtual Panel Walls, and the most innovative human-centric lighting invention of the 21st century, Virtual Sky, grace the walls, ceilings, and atria of medical centers and hospitals far and wide.

Retail

Our retail lighting systems showcase retail products and help determine the store ambiance, and therefore strengthen the direct shopping experience for the customer. Artificial Skylights can help persuade the customer to stay longer. According to the season, Artificial Sky’s retail lighting systems can be presented in tempting ways to arouse new emotions regarding the merchandise.

Senior Living

Artificial Sky is changing the look and feel of senior living facilities around the world for the better. From activity rooms to dining halls, the realistic LED skylights and virtual skylights from Artificial Sky create an uplifting environment for elderly residents. As a biophilic design element, Artificial Sky brings the splendor and advantages of nature to windowless and enclosed interior spaces where access to real nature is restricted or not possible.

Corporate

When working in the confines of an office, an element of daylight (natural or artificial) is essential for employee well-being, engagement, and productivity. Our Office Lighting Systems create a workplace infused with daylight providing a view of the outside, which can act as a buffer against the negative impact of job stress and positively impact general well-being.

Education

Today’s students spend less time outdoors than any other generation, and many of those indoor hours are spent in windowless classrooms with little or no natural daylight. Administrators and educators have an opportunity to bridge the gap between students and nature and improve their overall health by incorporating biophilic design elements from Artificial Sky into their learning spaces.

Government

The importance of incorporating daylight or faux natural lighting into building design is recognized by all those involved in developing buildings that focus on the well-being of their inhabitants. Having evolved in daylight for over 150,000 years, the phenomenon of people spending large amounts of time indoors, beneath artificial light, is – in evolutionary terms – very recent as it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution some 150 years ago that humans could transform night into day with the flick of a switch.

Residential

Artificial lighting is still essential in any room, especially those that lack a lot of natural light like home offices, bathrooms, and basements. Add faux natural lighting products and human-centric lighting (they’re designed to simulate daylight) to the rooms with little to no natural sunlight to quickly brighten up your home. LED skylights, LED windows, and or virtual skylights from Artificial Sky can easily be installed on the same day to help bring the outdoors in.

Entertainment

Entertainment lighting includes common spaces for public gatherings, such as lobbies in cinemas or theaters, entry spaces in civic arenas, museums, churches, and lobby bars in event buildings. The application of faux natural lighting in mass gatherings and entertainment venues is key to making an excellent first impression and ensuring repeat business.

Hospitality

You only need a few seconds to make a good impression on your guests in the hospitality industry. Hospitality lighting poses several challenges since it is responsible for establishing the mood, tone, and atmosphere of your hospitality space. By using hospitality lighting from Artificial Sky to influence a guest on an emotional level, hotels and restaurants can establish a particular atmosphere using biophilic design-friendly products from Artificial Sky such as our LED skylights and Virtual Sky ceiling systems.
