Virtual Sky | Circadian Lighting
What is a Virtual Sky? Simply put, it is artificial lighting in a very natural way, lighting that mimics not only what our eyes see in nature, but what our bodies feel and respond to as well.
If you’ve ever noticed that you tend to feel energized and drowsy around the same times every day, you’ve identified your circadian rhythm. Also known as the sleep/wake cycle, this is essentially our 24-hour internal clock.
What type of lighting is best for assisted living, long-term care, and memory care facilities?
Virtual Sky is the best lighting for patients suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia, and sundowner’s syndrome in assisted living, long-term care, and memory care facilities.
An increasing amount of evidence shows that bright, full-spectrum lighting manufactured by Artificial Sky, on the magnitude of 5,000 LUX to 10,000 LUX, can reset the circadian rhythm in people suffering from Alzheimer’s. Daily exposure to this type of light helps dementia patients with sleep disorders sleep longer and spend more time in deep sleep. As an added benefit, cognitive deterioration slowed with regular exposure to bright light, and symptoms of depression decreased.
In spaces designed for the elderly, Artificial Sky also helps to reduce social isolation by creating an environment residents enjoy communicably. Spaces with good, natural light help reduce falls, increase socialization, and stimulate positive physical and mental health.
Only Artificial Sky offers a true non-pharma solution to combat the effects of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and sundowner’s syndrome using their innovative Virtual Sky product. The Virtual Sky uses state-of-the-art LED lighting, advanced color matrixes, complex algorithms, and artificial intelligence with an advanced spectral power distribution to create an energy-friendly Virtual Sky lighting system that appears to be a blue sky with passing clouds overhead, birds flying, and even sunrise and sunset effects to mimic a full 24-hour day/night cycle indoors for healthcare residents and patients that are unable to spend time outdoors on their own.
Virtual Sky can remotely change from overhead dimmable white task lighting to an ultra-realistic blue sky with moving clouds that mimic daylight entirely. Virtual Sky has no size or shape limitations, does not require suspended ceiling grids, and comes completely seamless for a full-view sky effect. The purpose of Virtual Sky is to create bright, anti-glare circadian lighting which naturally changes throughout the day to expose people within the building to a range of white light that echoes the natural daylight outside, not only properties of daylight but actual moving views of nature as well for a more advanced approach towards treating memory care patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
The best lighting for dementia patients is Virtual Sky.
In spaces designed for the elderly, Artificial Sky helps to reduce social isolation by creating an environment residents enjoy communicably. Spaces with good, natural light help reduce falls, increase socialization, lower prescribed medications, and stimulate positive physical and mental health. Only Artificial Sky offers a true solution to combat the effects of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and sundowner’s syndrome.

The brain’s hypothalamus controls our circadian rhythms, but they are also directly affected by light. When it’s dark, your eyes send a signal to the hypothalamus that it’s time to feel tired. Your brain, in turn, sends a signal to your body to release the hormone melatonin, which makes you feel sleepy. That’s why your circadian rhythm tends to coincide with the cycle of daytime and nighttime (and why it’s so hard for shift workers to sleep during the day and stay awake at night).

Why Virtual Sky?
The brain’s hypothalamus controls our circadian rhythms, but they are also directly affected by light. When it’s dark, your eyes send a signal to the hypothalamus that it’s time to feel tired. Your brain, in turn, sends a signal to your body to release the hormone melatonin, which makes you feel sleepy. That’s why your circadian rhythm tends to coincide with the cycle of daytime and nighttime (and why it’s so hard for shift workers to sleep during the day and stay awake at night).
The need for daylight is a fundamental part of human biology. We evolved to spend most of our time outdoors, which means exposure to natural light has a whole host of health benefits, from promoting better sleep to improving our mood.
Circadian lighting is a lighting system that adjusts its color and intensity throughout the day to mimic natural light, promoting better sleep and overall well-being.
The business benefits of exposure to natural light are also clear. Office workers who sit near windows sleep on average for 46 minutes longer than those who don’t. While workplaces with good levels of natural light benefit from productivity gains between 3% and 40%.
Yet despite these known benefits, many of us spend a significant proportion of our days indoors exposed to artificial light that is relatively unhealthy to us. Unlike natural daylight, most artificial light doesn’t vary in color temperature, or intensity over the course of the day, until our Virtual Skylight.
In general, earlier in the day our bodies should be exposed to a higher proportion of short-wavelength blue light and stronger light intensity. This enhances alertness and performance and has a powerful effect on resetting the circadian clock. As evening draws in exposure to blue light should be avoided, to allow our bodies to feel sleepy. This is one of the reasons both iPhones and Android phones now offer red shift modes after sunset.
Given that so many of us are regularly spending more time in artificial light than natural daylight, creating artificial lighting which reflects the natural changes in daylight over the course of the day could make a huge difference to our health and wellbeing.
Our Virtual Skylight Uses state-of-the-art LED lighting, advanced color matrixes, complex algorithms, and artificial intelligence spectral power distribution we have now created an energy-friendly Virtual Sky luminaire that appears to be a blue sky with passing clouds overhead, birds flying, and even sunrise and sunset effects. Virtual Sky can remotely change from overhead dimmable white task lighting to an ultra-realistic blue sky with moving clouds that mimic daylight entirely. Virtual Sky has no size limitations, does not require suspended ceiling grids, and comes completely seamless for a full view sky effect. If you can dream it, we can build it!
Circadian Lighting for Healthier Space
The purpose of Virtual Skylight is to create circadian lighting which naturally changes over the course of the day to expose people within the building to a range of white light that echoes the natural daylight outside, not only properties of daylight but actual moving views of nature as well.
Virtual skylights can create circadian lighting to adjusts itself throughout the day to promote overall well-being.
As our Virtual Skylight technology has developed, it has shown strong potential as a safe, non-pharmacological way to counter disruption of circadian rhythm and improve the mental health and wellbeing of anyone who’s not exposed to the ideal levels of natural light, including teachers and students in windowless classrooms, senior living, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and memory care residents, and most importantly people who are stuck in an office for most of their day. Virtual Sky is being used in hospitality environments to help travelers cope with jet lag, in hospitals Virtual Sky can trigger faster healing times, reduce absenteeism in corporate environments, and in warehouses and factories it can even help shift workers adjust to working at night.
